CARELESS MOONLIGHT

Click on cover art to order.

Mike Blakely’s Careless Moonlight is lots of good blues, ballads, and a dash of ethnic Conjunto and Cajun spice all rolled up into one great musical package.  This CD has a different feel from Blakely’s previous releases . As in Any Sky, there is a marked transition from traditional western, but unlike Any Sky and its classic rock tone, Careless Moonlight has more blues than you usually get with Blakely.  Maybe it has something to do with being recorded in a studio in Italy, instead of Texas?  Whatever the root, you can surely find plenty of good music to flood your senses. FADED BLUE

Click on cover art to order.

"Faded Blue" contains a variety of musical styles ranging from country to blues to rock to Tex-Mex to Western Swing to Cajun. The common bond for all the styles is that they are all written or co-written by veteran Texas singer/songwriter, Mike Blakely. Blakely's regular band members bring more continuity to the divergent styles. They include Larry Nye on lead guitar, Donnie Price on bass, Scott Martin on steel guitar and resonator guitar, and Stefano Bertolotti on drums. Guest appearances include Ron Knuth on fiddle and Joel Guzman on accordion and B-3 organ. From upbeat rockers like "Always Never Enough", to the very personal ballad, "The Hatter's Hymn," this disc is full of genuine original music. Solid production, fantastic musicianship, and Blakely's strong vocal performances make every tune a pleasure to the ear.

WEST OF YOU

CLICK ON COVER TO ORDER

If you ever wondered what happened to the “Western” part of Country-Western music, you can find it in this CD by Mike Blakely.  “WEST OF YOU” features 14 original songs written or co-written by Mike Blakely.  You’ll find ballads about the Old West, two-steppers about rodeos and dance halls, cowboy laments, and big story songs.

“The Last Comanche Moon,” a seven-minute epic western ballad, was for three months the most requested song on KFAN radio, Fredericksburg, TX – one of the leading Americana stations in the country, and the most-listened-to station in the world on the internet.

Two other  tunes from the CD – “It’s About to Get Western” and “Here’s to Horses” were discovered by legendary Texas singer-songwriter, Gary P. Nunn, and recorded on his most recent CD, produced by another Texas legend, Lloyd Maines.

The CD features Mike Blakely on rhythm guitar, mandolin, lead vocals, and background vocals.  Other musicians include Larry Nye on lead guitar and background vocals; Donnie Price on bass; B.B. Morse on stand-up bass; Paul Pearcy on drums and percussion; two-time national fiddle champ Randy Elmore on fiddle, mandolin, and lead guitar; Scott Boland on lead guitar; Steve Edwards on accordion; Jerry Harkins on pedal steel; and Fabrizio Poggi on harmonica.

Special guest performances are made by two Texas songwriting legends, Butch Hancock and Steven Fromholz.  Butch played harmonica on two tracks, while Steven sings harmonies on The Whiskey Trader’s Song.

The CD was recorded at Larry Nye’s Lazy L Studios in Kingsland, Texas; engineered by Larry Nye; and co-produced by Larry Nye and Mike Blakely.  “WEST OF YOU”  represents the national premiere for the new label, Swing Rider Records.

RIDE THE RIVER

CLICK ON COVER TO ORDER

Mike Blakely’s first CD, “RIDE THE RIVER,” won Album of The Year in the Texas Hill Country Music Awards for 1998, and also earned Mike the honor of Songwriter of the Year.  You’ll know why when you listen to this gathering of 12 cowboy and western tunes written by Mike Blakely.  Though Mike never sought national distribution or airplay for the CD, he has sold copies from the stage for years to the delight of thousands of listeners in the U.S. and Europe.

Track one, “Charlie Siringo,” has become a popular tune on the cowboy poetry and music circuit, thanks partly to western singer, Craig Chambers, who recorded the song on his own album and has played it nationwide at cowboy gatherings.  Other covers from “RIDE THE RIVER” include Bill Barwick’s version of “You Don’t Need That Cowgirl,” and a special version of “Mira Las Palomas” recorded as a duo by Geronimo Trevino III, and Johnny Rodriquez.

The title track, “Ride The River,” a rousing western story song, is a favorite at Mike’s live shows, often bringing listeners to their feet at the end of an evening of music.  Other crowd favorites include the lament, “Woulda Been a Cowboy for You,” and the love song, “Slow Fallin’ Rain.”

Recorded at Larry Nye’s Lazy L Studios in Kingsland, Texas, the CD was produced by Nye and Blakely, and engineered by Nye.   Mike Blakely plays rhythm guitar and mandolin, and sings lead and background vocals.  Other players include Donnie Price on bass, Larry Nye on lead guitars and background vocals, Ron Knuth on mandolin and accordion, Champ Hood on fiddle and mandolin, Scott Boland on lead guitar and Eric Blakely on drums.
